Nike, thank you for this bittersweet read. Your resilience is amazing. Thank you also for reminding me about record stories! I remember those, I had versions of the Grimms fairy tales. I also loved Peter and the wolf, your description of the buttery static is just perfect! xo

Dear Diane, Thank you so much for reading, and for your generous response. It was very difficult to write this piece, in many ways, not least because of the fragility of my memories of these events from so very long ago. Still, writing about it is also liberating: the opposite of holding these memories, and the thoughts and feelings that go with them, in some shameful secret cabinet of the self.
